Transforming a New Outdoor Space in Pottstown, PA
Project Overview
This homeowner in Pottstown, PA recently finished construction of their beautiful custom home and contacted us to design an attractive front entrance and to transform their blank backyard into a welcoming backyard outdoor living space.
The Vision
Being able to spend more time outside with family and friends was a top priority for these Pottstown, PA homeowners. In addition to a front walkway and plantings, they wanted a patio that would enhance the functionality of their new home and at the same time create an aesthetically pleasing outdoor living area. The homeowners wanted an expansive space to accommodate a separate dining and conversation area in addition to a fire pit with ample seating surrounding it.
Challenge
The presence of a swale close to the back of the house restricted the available area for a backyard patio. We addressed the challenge of the swale relocating it away from the house using a boulder retaining wall and dry creek bed. The sloping terrain necessitated an innovative design solution that led to a multi-level patio.
Key Features
Front Yard Transformation
Installed a paver walkway with strategically placed outdoor lighting fixtures to illuminate pathway and highlight landscaping elements. Also designed and installed plantings to bring curb appeal to the foundation and front entrance.
Backyard Patio
Designed a multi-level patio using Techo-Bloc Blu 60 to maximize space and accommodate varying functional zones. The upper patio had room for a large outdoor dining area and cozy sitting space and created a relaxing ambiance
Fire Pit Area
On the lower level of the patio, we installed a wood-burning fire pit featuring a smokeless insert. We created a nice flow with stairs to walk from the upper patio to the lower fire pit area. We enhanced the visual appeal of the fire pit area with a porcelain wood paver inlay and added lighting to make the space more inviting during the darker evening hours.
Natural Stone Slab Steps
On the lower level of the patio, we installed natural stone slab steps to seamlessly connect different levels of the yard.
Conclusion
The use of a multi-level design was a much more cost-effective solution to deal with the slope of the yard than completely re-grading the entire space.
Through strategic planning and creative problem-solving, we successfully transformed the front and backyard outdoor space into their dream oasis.
