Proper Watering and Fertilizing Are Essential
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the colors, shapes and textures of the flowers you planted late spring. Two maintenance tips will reward you with a healthy and vibrant display.
When to Water
The most common cause of poor performance is over or under watering. Water needs vary from flower to flower but following a few guidelines will make it easy for you.
Annuals have shallow roots so they will dry out before perennials. Be diligent about watering especially when the hot summer arrives. Water in the early morning or evening when the sun is not as intense. However, do not water excessively in the evening in order to prevent fungus growing on plants.
Perennials need less water since they have deeper roots but will require slow and deep watering when initially planted while developing a vigorous root system.
When to Fertilize
Plants love to be fed. Fertilizing adds nutrients to the soil which the soil lacks.
Annuals – put in a slow release fertilizer (Osmocote) in the bottom of the hole as you plant then use a water soluble fertilizer (e.g. Miracle Gro or other liquid fertilizer) every few weeks.
Perennials – A gentle fertilizer such as Miracle Gro or can be used once a month on new plantings especially when they start blooming.
Removing spent flower heads (dead-heading) generally extends blooming. Most perennials should be cut back in late winter or early spring once they brown up or are frost-killed.
