Keeping your lawn healthy is easy when you know the answers!

Summer is here and everyone is enjoying outdoor living.  Homeowners are anxious to do what is right for their lawn but are often puzzled as to the best practices.  So we thought it would be helpful to print our most frequently asked questions and share the secrets to keeping your lawn looking fresh and healthy during the summer.

Lawn Care Questions

Q:  What can I do to repair my lawn that is affected by the hot, dry summer or just needs some rejuvenation?

A:  September would be an ideal time to consider aeration and overseeding.

Q:  What is the correct height that grass should be cut?

A:  Grass should be cut no less than 3” high…the higher the better in the summer months.

With longer grass, the yard protects itself by providing shade for the soil beneath which in turns reduces the evaporation rate of water in the soil which further fortifies the root system of the yard.

Q:  What happened to the grass I used to have growing in the shaded areas of my lawn?

A:  Grass likes a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight.  Trees that shade our houses require food, water and oxygen from the very soil where our grasses are trying to grow. Yes, there are shade-adaptable blends, but may require more frequent seeding.

Q: What is the value of a soil test?

A:  Taking a soil test determines the pH, mineral and organic levels in your lawn.  This is the basic starting place in planting, growing and maintaining any type of lawn.

Q:  Help!  My dog’s urine is killing my lawn.  What should I do?

A:  Pouring water over the spot as soon as the dog pees is one way….but not very practical.  Best thing to do is to rake away the dried-up grass, turn the soil and reseed.

By remembering the above tips, a homeowner can ensure that their yard looks lush and healthy the whole summer long.   To learn more about proper lawn care practices or an Organic-based Lawn Care Program for your yard, contact Whitehouse Landscaping at 484-300-4290.
