While baseball season hits the homestretch and football season is just warming up, it’s time to put your yard to rest for the winter. Spend some prep time now to set yourself up for success next spring.
Checklist of Chores Before the Snow Flies
- Make sure your hoses are emptied and stored.
- Do any last minute transplanting of trees or shrubs you may want to relocate.
- Still time to plant trees and shrubs. Fall planting encourages good root development, allowing the plants to get established before spring.
- Trim back perennials and gently rake out excess leaves in spring.
- Pull weeds as soon as they pop. Remember, any weed you eliminate from the garden this fall will possibly prevent thousands of weed seeds from sprouting in the garden next spring.
- Prune trees and bushes. It’s important to prune certain species during their dormant season.
- For your last mowing in early November, you can lower your deck to 2 l/2”. This close cut will discourage mice and voles from making camp over winter.
- Plant spring flowering bulbs.
- Address your tender bulbs. After the first frost the stems should be cut down to 2” Lift the bulbs out of the ground, dry slightly and store in a cool, dry, dark place until spring.
- Don’t cut down your grasses. They retain their shape through winter and give some visual interest.
- Leaf removal – leaves should be raked or blown off of lawn areas.
- Walk around your yard and take notes. Review what worked this season and what needs to be changed. Make plans for work to be done in the spring.
