Are Weeds Invading Your Lawn?

The typical spring weeds will appear soon: chickweed, henbit, annual bluegrass and dandelion, to mention a few of the typical lawn invaders. You may not know the weeds in your lawn by name, but you see the same variety pop up every spring making your lawn appear unkempt, not to mention compromising the health and beauty of your lawn.

How to Reduce Weeds in your Lawn

Mow them down in spring.   Mixed greens in a salad are desirable and delicious, but unwanted, annoying greens in your lawn aren’t!   To minimize weeds, one easy step is to mow them down when they start appearing in early spring.  This ensures that their flowers are not allowed to go to seed, spreading more weeds for next year.  We’ve had a warm winter, and expect to see weeds earlier this season.

Mow higher later in the season.  Weed seeds, like all plants, require sunlight to sprout.  Raise your mower height to allow the grass to grow tall and thick to shade the soil, so weed seeds are less able to sprout and grow

Apply pre-emergent.   Preventing new weed seeds from coming up, apply a pre-emergent.  A pre-emergent prevents the germination of weed seeds and in southeastern Pennsylvania, it particularly prevents crabgrass from appearing in lawns.   Additional weed suppression applications are also recommended to stay on top of weed growth.

Why So Many Weeds?

Healthy soil – thicker roots = beautiful, healthy green grass = fewer weeds.

Poor Soil.  Weeds tend to be an indicator of poor soil quality.   Healthy grass needs nutrients and water found in better quality soils.  If grass gets the nutrients it needs, it naturally develops a strong root system and cell wall thickness.  The end result is thicker turf which will help prevent weeds from popping up in the first place.

How to Boost Soil Health

Make your life easier and your lawn greener.

Adding bio-nutritional products to your lawn on a regular basis adds microorganisms that help the roots to grow better.   Your lawn’s roots respond to good nutrition and a healthy lawn prevents annoying weeds to thrive.

The soil in our yards around the Royersford, Gilbertsville, Schwenksville, and Collegeville area has been bulldozed and disturbed over time and is missing those critical organisms that foster healthy root development for grass to thrive.  That’s where bio-nutrients are so beneficial!  It allows nutrients to get where they are most needed – your lawn’s roots.

Looking for a Lawn Care Program that Really Works?

The quality and effectiveness of the bio-nutritional products really matter.   Not all products are created equal.   Some products contain lots of microbes that do nothing for your lawn.  It’s important to have microbes that actually work well for what you’re using them for.

Whitehouse Landscaping offers truly beneficial lawn bio-nutrition. Choosing a company that offers products that are proven to work gives you peace of mind.   We did the research and narrowed it down to a product, Holganix that really produces results.  The best part of bio-nutrients is that they pose no danger to the environment.  They allow you to be more eco-friendly and enjoy healthier grass at the same time.
