How to Care for Your Fresh Cut Christmas Tree

Now is the time to decorate your home for Christmas and what better way to do that than to purchase a tree from a local Christmas tree farm.  You can definitely be assured of getting a fresh tree if you cut your own.  But if it’s more convenient to purchase a pre-cut tree, there are a few pointers to make sure your tree is fresh.

What to Look For when Purchasing a Pre-Cut Tree

Check freshness by bending the needles.  They should be soft and pliable, not crisp and dry.  If the needles pull out easily, or if they appear lifeless, the tree may be past its prime.

Once Your Tree Comes Home

Saw off an inch from the bottom of the trunk and set it in a bucket of water until you’re ready to bring it indoors.  This new cut across the base of the trunk opens fresh vascular tissue so that the tree can absorb water freely.

Bringing your tree in from the cold right away can dry it out so allow the tree to sit in the garage to help the tree acclimate .

Bringing Your Tree Inside

Place your tree in a stand with a water reservoir.  Keep the reservoir full; it may need to be checked daily and try to keep it away from heaters and vents.  Cooler temperatures and higher humidity will prolong the life of the tree.

After Christmas

Look for a local recycling program at your city/borough/county website.  As a renewable resource, real Christmas trees come full circle back to the soil through community recycling programs.

Another great idea is to keep your tree in its stand outdoors.  Use the branches to place bird feeders or drape them with pinecones with peanut butter and seed. Your feathery friends are sure to appreciate the added shelter and cover throughout the harsh winter. You can also use the branches as mulch to protect plants over winter.
