Think before you buy!
How many plants have you purchased in the course of your gardening
lifetime without having the least idea of where you’ll put them
when you get home?
Most of us gardeners might answer “more than we’d like to admit”
Spring is the time to be thinking of replacing those winter damaged, or just plain non-thriving plants in your landscape. Or maybe you want to create a new landscaped bed. But before you head off to your favorite nursery or garden center, take time to think before you buy. Impulse decisions can lead to plants that are not a perfect fit for your landscape.
Points to Consider
Sun or Shade Exposure. Know ahead of time just how much sun or shade your site receives. Plants will thrive when you plant them in the right site.
Know the Plant’s Growth Pattern. Visualize what the tree or shrub will look like five or ten years from now. Consider the mature height and width of what you are planting so the planting won’t overpower your foundation or yard space in the future.
Match Plants with Soil. Poorly drained soils lead to root diseases. If you have poorly drained soils, then select plants that can grow successful in them.
Inquire if Plants are Disease and Insect Resistant. Why set yourself up for a plant that ‘might’ have problems. Consider a native plant that is naturally disease resistant.
Don’t Forget about the Deer. If you’re challenged with hungry deer, make sure what you are planting is not deer invasive.
Take the time to think about your needs before you purchase plants. Not only will it save you time and money, but it will give you an attractive and functional space to enjoy for many years to come.
