Add a punch to your winter landscape!
Why put your containers away for the winter? Nothing says ‘Happy Holidays’ or ‘Welcome’ like an attractive container of greens, branches, flowers and berries. You don’t have to have a green thumb to design an attractive container. Here are a few simple guidelines to help you get started.
Pick Your Greens
Cut 2-3 different kinds of greens for a good mix of colors and textures such as: White Pine, Scotch Pine, Rhododendrons, Juniper, Cedar, Spruce, etc. Don’t have enough evergreen shrubs or trees on your property? Your local nursery often supplies fresh greens. Your fall containers are just waiting to be replanted. The different colors and shapes of the greens will create interest and and serve as a backdrop for the contrasting extras to come.
Choose your Extras
You’ll need some fillers for accent. Look around your yard first. Red or yellow twig dogwood, plumes from ornamental grasses, curly willow, colorful winterberry or holly make great accents. While your taking your dog for a walk in the woods, cut some seed pods or anything else in nature. Spray paint them with glitter or solid color. Craft stores have lots of accents that can add glitter and height. The possibilities are endless. Don’t forget about pine cones, or even holiday balls or ornaments. A nice ribbon makes a great focal point.
Arrangement
Just stick your greens into the soil. Keep proportions in mind as you arrange. The longest pieces should not exceed the height of the pot or else the arrangement will look top heavy.
Maintenance
Water it regularly until it is frozen. Expect it to last at least 3-4 months. You can also decide to change out some of the elements from a holiday to winter theme. Just think, when your pot begins to look shabby, you’ll be thinking about Spring.
